As an aesthetic practitioner it goes without saying that you want to deliver the best possible service to your clients. However there may be occasions when things go wrong and a claim is made against you. We know how distressing this can be for not only the patient but also the practitioner.

Eddie Hooker, CEO of Hamilton Fraser Cosmetic Insurance, recommends the following five steps that will help in the event of a claim being made against you:

1. Obtain full consent

Always ensure you obtain full consent from your client before the start of any treatment. Set out all the risks and benefits as well as any potential side effects and ensure your client has read and absorbed all of the information before they consent to the treatment they will be undergoing.

2. Keep detailed records

Always make sure you maintain a written record of all of the treatments you have provided, on the date you provided it. This should include machine settings together (where appropriate) with before and after photographs. You will need to keep your notes for 10 years in case a claim may arise in the future. You will also need to keep your equipment in good working order and up to date in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines.

3. Stay up to date with your training

Ensure you can demonstrate you are fully trained and competent by undergoing initial training and also regular re-training throughout your career and retain all certificates.

4. Manage expectations

It is important to ensure the client has realistic expectations of the outcome of the treatment and whether (and when) any top up treatments may be necessary. Ensure that you allow sufficient time at consultation to cover this.

5. Medical due diligence

Make sure you get a full medical history from the client and explain full aftercare treatment and what they need to carry out themselves.

It is important to ensure that you have adequate insurance protection in case the worst happens. At Hamilton Fraser Cosmetic Insurance we have been insuring aesthetic practitioners for many years and understand the aesthetic industry, so please contact us on 0800 63 43 881 or email [email protected] for insurance advice and a free quotation.

We’re delighted to announce the addition of an exciting new training course to our programme. We’re now able to offer training in the innovative 8 Point Lift – with our next course on 22nd September.

The technique is also known as the Liquid Lift, Fluid Facelift or Non-Surgical Facelift, and takes a more holistic approach to facial revolumising using dermal fillers.

Where the standard approach to facial revolumising involves injecting fillers into localised areas where the need for volume is most evident – for example, plumping up thinning lips or filling nasolabial folds – the 8 Point Lift takes a more comprehensive approach that is individually tailored to each patient.

Looking at the face as a whole, the practitioner treats not only the locally affected areas (the symptoms of volume loss), but addresses the root cause – a loss of volume throughout the mid and lower face.

What does 8 Point Lift treatment involve?

The treatment uses Allergan’s 2nd generation VYCROSS™ range of advanced dermal fillers, which are injected at eight key points on each side of the face.

In one appointment, the practitioner adds volume to the cheeks, softens nasolabial folds, lifts the corners of the mouth and firms the jawline and jowl area, giving the patient’s entire mid to lower face a noticeable lift.

Because the 8 Point Lift is individualised to each patient, with injections precisely adapted to fit the patient’s profile, the results are natural and in complete harmony with the face.

Results should be visible around 1-2 weeks after treatment, and can last for up to 18 months – longer than regular filler treatments.

Why add the treatment to your repertoire?

The treatment is incredibly popular in the USA and Brazil (where it was created by plastic surgeon Mauricio De Maio), and has only recently made its way to British shores.

There are currently a limited number of UK clinics offering the treatment, so training in the technique offers a great opportunity to enhance your reputation as a forward-thinking practitioner, and inevitably boost profits at your practice.

The uses of Botox are many and varied, with the product currently licensed for all kinds of applications, both medical and aesthetic. Best known as an anti-wrinkle treatment, Botox is also used to combat excessive sweating, treat urinary incontinence, relieve migraines and reduce muscle spasms.

And the newspapers last week featured another aesthetic application for the drug – treating gummy smiles.

Injected into the upper lip, the drug temporarily reduces the strength of the muscles which pull the top lip up toward the nose when a person smiles. Consequently, the amount of gum revealed is smaller, creating a more pleasing “Hollywood” smile.

Dentists and cosmetic surgeons broadly agree that the ‘ideal smile’ sees the upper lip sit roughly level with the top of the teeth, with a maximum of only two millimetres of gum showing. According to Dr Stan Heifetz, a New York based cosmetic dentist, “Anything over three to four millimetres of gum showing starts to look ‘gummy'”.

To date, the most widely used treatment for correcting gummy smiles has been surgery, with several different techniques available depending on the underlying cause, including lip repositioning or gum lift/contouring surgery (gingivectomy).

But Botox has the advantage of being much quicker, taking only around 10 minutes to administer, as well as being far less invasive and cheaper for patients. And as with wrinkle treatment, results are fairly long-term, typically lasting for up to 6 months.

This particular use for Botox offers another popular treatment to add to your clinic. Here at Cosmetic Courses, we have been offering training in this technique for many years as part of our Advanced Botox & dermal fillers course.
